Following a comprehensive review, Lombard has decided to fully migrate to Chainlink's Cross-Chain Interoperability Protocol (CCIP) as the exclusive cross-chain infrastructure expanding the distribution of our $1B+ in Bitcoin-backed assets (LBTC and BTC.b).

Going forward:

CCIP will replace LayerZero as the cross-chain infrastructure across Solana, Etherlink, Berachain, Corn, and TAC LayerZero on Morph and Swell will be fully deprecated This decision prioritizes the safety and security of all Lombard users and reflects our commitment to maintaining the security record we've built since day one, zero security incidents and 100% uptime. As we scale, that standard doesn't change. It also reflects where the market is heading, toward infrastructure that is secure by default and built to institutional standards.

Why Chainlink CCIP

CCIP has emerged as the standard in cross-chain infrastructure, providing an enterprise-grade framework to secure high-value assets like LBTC and BTC.b and bring the world’s largest digital asset , Bitcoin, safely into DeFi at scale.

To begin, we’re migrating to CCIP across core ecosystems including Solana, and Etherlink, Berachain, Corn, and TAC. Additionally, we are deprecating LayerZero usage on Morph and Swell. By leveraging CCIP, Lombard assets are being secured by the highest level of cross-chain security backed by:

  • Defense-in-depth architecture: CCIP establishes a strong baseline security guarantee through the default use of Decentralized Oracle Networks (DONs).
  • Independent nodes: A minimum of 16 independent, security-reviewed node operators securing each bridge lane.
  • Risk management: Built-in risk controls, including native rate limits that act as circuit breakers to prevent widespread contagion in worst-case scenarios.
  • Institutional standards: An extensively audited codebase supported by institutional certifications, including SOC 2 Type 2 and ISO/IEC 27001:2022 certification.

As part of our migration from LayerZero to Chainlink CCIP, we are adopting the Cross-Chain Token (CCT) standard to leverage a burn-and-mint native bridging model, enabling a single canonical token across chains. The CCT standard further reduces external dependencies for Lombard assets by giving us complete ownership over token contracts without inheriting or relying on any specific CCIP libraries or functions. This eliminates vendor lock-in, giving us increased flexibility moving forward.

With CCIP, we not only benefit from its secure-by-default foundation, but also the ability to configure additional security layers on top. This includes having our Security Consortium validate transactions as an additional attestation. This enables us to enforce our own cross-chain transfer rules, maintain a clear record of asset transfers, update verification logic as needed, and maintain control over how LBTC moves between chains.

“We’re proud to work with Lombard and support its migration to Chainlink CCIP. This marks an important milestone in establishing a standardized, secure cross-chain foundation for Bitcoin-backed assets to be distributed seamlessly across chains. This migration to CCIP aligns with a broader shift across DeFi where leading protocols are adopting defense-in-depth infrastructure that meets the highest standards of security and reliability required to support institutional adoption and scale BTCFi to billions globally.” — Johann Eid, Chief Business Officer at Chainlink Labs

“We recently conducted extensive internal security reviews of all cross-chain solutions. It became clear that Chainlink CCIP provides the highest level of cross-chain security in the industry. By deprecating migrating to Chainlink CCIP to secure LBTC and BTC.b, we’re providing our users the assurances needed to drive long-term growth and the continued expansion of Lombard.” — Jacob Phillips, Co-Founder of Lombard

About Chainlink Chainlink is the industry-standard oracle platform bringing the capital markets onchain and the market leader powering the majority of decentralized finance (DeFi). The Chainlink stack provides the essential data, interoperability, compliance, and privacy standards needed to power advanced blockchain use cases for institutional tokenized assets, lending, payments, stablecoins, and more. Since inventing decentralized oracle networks, Chainlink has enabled tens of trillions in transaction value and now secures the vast majority of DeFi. Many of the world’s largest financial services institutions have also adopted Chainlink’s standards and infrastructure, including Swift, Euroclear, Mastercard, Fidelity International, UBS, S&P Dow Jones Indices, FTSE Russell, WisdomTree, ANZ, and top protocols such as Aave, Lido, GMX, and many others. Chainlink leverages a novel fee model where offchain and onchain revenue from enterprise adoption is converted to LINK tokens and stored in a strategic Chainlink Reserve. Learn more at chain.link.
